What are top-load testing standards?
International standards organisations such as ASTM, ISO, EN, BSI, DIN, and AFNOR develop a wide range of test methods to cover top-load testing.
In addition, industry groups such as ISBT (International Society of Beverage Technologists) and CETIE (International Technical Centre for Bottling) publish guidelines and recommended test methods covering top-load.
There are also many companies that have evolved their own in-house test methods, for checking the axial top-load strength of their packaging.
Mecmesin has extensive experience in developing test equipment to meet the challenges posed by top-load/compression/crush testing to international and in-house standards.
Test standards commonly used
- ISBT and CETIE Voluntary Test methods for PET bottles
- Coca-Cola SM-PR-2645 Vertical Load Resistance for non-refillable Plastic Bottles
- ISO 3037 Corrugated fibreboard - determination of edgewise crush resistance (unwaxed edge method)
- ISO 8113 Glass containers - resistance to vertical load - test method
- ISO 12048 Packaging - complete filled transport packages - compression and stacking tests using a compression tester
- ASTM D642 Determining the compressive resistance of shipping containers, components, and unit loads
- ASTM D2659 Column crush properties of blown thermoplastics containers
- ASTM D4169 Performance testing for shipping containers and systems
- ASTM D4577 Compression resistance of a container under constant load
- DIN 55440-1 Packaging test - compression test - test with a constant conveyance-speed
- DIN 555261-1 Packaging test; compression test; dynamical test for plastic containers with a capacity up to 10 liters
- TAPPI T804 Compression test of fiberboard shipping containers
- TAPPI T808 Flat crush test of corrugated board (flexible beam method)
- TAPPI T811 Edgewise compressive strength of corrugated fiberboard (short column test)
Top-load testing standards
Some of the most common Top-load testing standards we're asked about by our customers include...
- ASTM D2659 Standard Test Method for Column Crush Properties of Blown Thermoplastic Containers
- ISBT and CETIE Voluntary Test methods for PET bottles
- Coca-Cola SM-PR-2645 Vertical Load Resistance for non-refillable Plastic Bottles

How can we help you?
We work with our customers to interpret the requirements of the standard and, for many common tests, we have a range of pre-configured solutions.
Bespoke development
For more specialised requirements, such as products and components that are harder to seat or grip securely, we provide a custom design service to develop bespoke grips and fixtures.
What do our customers say?
The new "-xt system" is simple and tough enough for us to use in a production environment, while simultaneously allowing us to get the information we need [...] allowing us to pre-empt issues before they can affect quality, with much less effort than previously. This means we have less waste, improved efficiencies and can spend more time making our products.
